Inlays and Onlays
Here at Village Dental, we offer a wide range of restorations to help upkeep your oral health. Dental inlays and onlays are a more conservative form of restorative treatment than dental crowns. They are ideal for teeth that are too damaged to receive a filling, but are not as damaged to need the covering and protection provided by a crown.
Inlays are placed on the center of a tooth, while onlays extend to one or more of the cusps of the tooth. They are made using a variety of materials such as composite resin, porcelain and even gold.
Benefits of using inlays and onlays:
- The placement of inlays and onlays requires minimum preparation on the tooth, allowing us to preserve more of the natural tooth structure while restoring damaged areas.
- They can be made to match the color of the teeth and blend well with the rest of your mouth to create a natural look.
- Unlike metal fillings, inlays and onlays do not contract or expand with temperature changes in the mouth.
- With proper care, they can last for up to 30 years.
The placement of inlay or onlay restorations takes two appointments at our office. During the first visit, we prepare your teeth and take impressions of them to send to a dental lab where your restorations are made. A temporary restoration is placed on the teeth to protect it. In the next visit, the temporary restoration is removed and the permanent one is bonded to your teeth. We will check the fit and shade of your restoration and will also give you instructions on how you can care for your newly restored teeth.
