Despite being the hardest substance in the body, the enamel, is not resistant to wear and acid attack. But with the help of fluoride, this can change. Fluoride coats the teeth to make them more resistant to acid attacks; thus, reducing the risk of cavity formations. But how was this property of fluoride discovered? Curious who made it possible for people to consider the use of the mineral fluoride to keep oral health in shape? Know how it all started!
Believe it or not, the benefits of fluoride were discovered thanks to the observations of Dr. Frederick McKay. It was in 1901 when the dental school graduate started his dental practice in Colorado Springs. Shockingly, many people that were native in the area had permanent brown stains on their teeth. Since there was no explanation available, Dr. McKay decided to investigate.
In the year 1909, a distinguished dental researcher named Dr. G. V. Black assisted Dr. McKay with his investigation. For six years, they worked together and came across two essential discoveries. First, the condition was the result of developmental issues in children’s teeth. While the other was, people with brown stains on their teeth seemed to be more resistant to cavities. Some locals suggested that it may be because of a certain ingredient in their water supply. This idea intrigued Dr. McKay, but there was no evidence.
Dr. McKay visited a town in Oakley, Idaho since parents noticed that their children’s teeth were developing brown stains. It started after a shared pipeline to a warm spring was built several miles away. Although the connection between the water supply and oral health was still unclear, Dr. McKay advised the families to stop using the new water supply. After a few years, children in Oakley stopped developing the brown stains on their teeth.
Due to this, Dr. McKay became confident that the water supply is to blame about the mottling of children’s teeth. But since he was still not aware of what was unique about the water supply, Dr. McKay traveled to another area in Bauxite, Arkansas. And that was where he got his answer! Thanks to the photo-spectrographic analysis, it was discovered that there were high levels of fluoride in the water.
Thanks to this discovery, many years of experimentation and studies were conducted. With it, scientists, dentists, researchers, and the general public learned about the importance of fluoride for the teeth.
